Abstract Art Article Brief |
1.Abstract Expressionism, which emerged in the 1940s, applied the principles of Expressionism to abstract painting. The action painting of Jackson Pollock, in which paint was dripped, dropped, smeared, spattered, or thrown on the canvas, is a good example.
2.Many students want to start with abstract art and many of them soon give it up. The reason for this is that abstract art is difficult. It is difficult in the sense that it requires artistic discipline, knowledge and a certain amount of expertise in painting techniques, usually acquired through training in more formal aspects of art.
3. I set out knowing it was going to be far more of an abstract painting, with colors that reflected the intense heat and dryness of the area where these grow. I did a few thumbnail sketches with the shape of my canvas in mind, then picked my favorite and got painting. I started by sketching in the elements of the abstract oil painting with a pencil (you can’t see this very clearly in the photo). Then, using a size 12 filbert brush, I painted the first color in, the Turner’s yellow. Look closely and you’ll see the brush strokes follow or echo the half-circle of the sun as well as the horizontal band at the bottom.
4.Abstract painting might look easy, and it might look as if the artist did not know what they were painting. It might look like it; however, this is far from the truth. Abstract can be more difficult than landscape or scenery, because there is nothing to copy from, and nothing like it has been painted prior to the moment that the artist picked up the brush.
5.Buying and collecting abstract canvas paintings and wall art can be a labor of love. I love abstract paintings. I think that my favorite medium is gouache. I recently purchased a work from Oscar Bluemner. The person I bought the abstract painting from had it in storage for over twenty years, which I hung in my office.
6.Abstract art is completely non-objective or non-representational. Abstract art is one without a recognisable subject, one which doesn't relate to anything external or try to "look like" something. Instead the colour and form (and often the materials and support) are the subject of the abstract painting.
7.The power of abstract art is in the way it can open channels to our inner core, our emotions, unlike any representational art can. Abstract art can achieve this as we are stripped of the need to digest and assimilate the representations of real objects, and free as an observer to feel and be taken by the artists away from the expectation of our preconceptions.
8.The Oxford English Dictionary gives this definition Abstract • adjective /abstrakt/ 1 theoretical rather than physical or concrete. 2 (of art) achieving its effect through colour and shapes rather than attempting to represent recognizable reality.
Often we hear people ask what Modern, Conceptual or Abstract art means. Good art, though it is entirely up to the individual, may move people to feel or think something but like music it doesn’t have to be about anything.
